Rev. Osei Kofi: From womanizing football star to devoted pastor

Published on: 16 July 2024

Former Ghana star Rev. Osei Kofi, admitted that his past footballing fame led him to a playboy lifestyle before embracing Christianity and becoming a pastor.

Kofi, who won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1963 and 1965, explained that footballers in his era weren't treated like professionals and had more freedom for personal pursuits.

He revealed that his talent attracted a lot of women, and he indulged in that lifestyle. Kofi said that women would even visit him at home.

However, after finding religion, he changed his ways and is now devoted to his pastoral work.

"The Bible says the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. I am a Christian, and through football, I became a pastor. So, it is the fear of God that is in me, because there were many things I was doing while playing football, but I have stopped. It’s not just Christianity, but it’s the reason I am still strong at age 84," the Asante Kotoko legend told Joy News.

He reflected on the past, stating, "In those days, we were not professionals but amateurs, so, as for women, I had many at that time. It was my talent that got me the women. If I didn’t go out, they would come. I am telling you the truth."

Osei Kofi, the legendary "wizard dribbler" known for his mesmerizing skills, found success both on and off the field.

A joint top scorer in the victorious 1965 Africa Cup of Nations and third-highest scorer in 1968, he later built a loving family with twelve children.
