David Duncan was not Asante Kotoko's first choice coaching option, GHANAsoccernet.com has learnt.

The Porcupine Warriors were rather interested in contracting Heart of Lions head coach Yussif Abubakar to take over the mantle at the club.

But Abubakar, who is under contract with Kpando-based Lions, told them is under contract with the Giant Killers and will not leave until his contract was over.

Kotoko then turned to Duncan who was a free agent and reached a deal with him. Kotoko's Supporters Chief K5 who is a Board member for the Kumasi giants revealed on Accra-based Happy FM.

"They had decided to get Yussif Abubakar from Heart of Lions but there were issues with his contract with Lions," he said.

Duncan's appointment brought a somewhat small division within the Kotoko supporter fraternity with some warning the management not to appoint him due to his utterances about the club in the past.

The former Hearts of Oak head coach was unveiled by Kotoko on Thursday and he has officially began work as head coach.
