RFEF intend to hold Copa del Rey final as a tribute to coronavirus victims

The coronavirus outbreak has suspended every single level of Spanish sport, and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) are hoping that when football can restart again, the Copa del Rey final will be held as a tribute to the victims of COVID-19.

The match is set to take place between Athletic Club and Real Sociedad, although it's unclear just when it can be played.

"It's going to be a very emotional day," RFEF president Luis Rubiales detailed in an interview with TeleBilbao.

"We want to remember those who are no longer with us and give thanks to the health services, who are doing so much for our society.

"Let's see if little by little the ICUs empty and we return to normal life, but not for football, for seeing each other again, hugging each other, recovering friendships.

"We're convinced that we can achieve this together, but the first thing we are doing at the RFEF is making ourselves available to the health service; we have given the Federation's hotel to physiotherapists, psychologists and doctors."

When pushed on the matter further, Rubiales maintained that football can't isolate itself from society in these times of strife.

"We can't turn our backs on a country which is struggling with hospital space or nursing home problems," he added.

"We must work together and be outstanding.

"What we are all living through now has to make us rethink our priorities.

"Health comes above everything and we don't want to think about setting dates to end sporting competitions until the conditions change."
