Richard Kingson expresses bewilderment at Black Stars captaincy disputes

Former Black Stars shot-stopper Richard Kingson stated that the arguments from players over the armband in the senior national team confuses him.

The 42-year-old mostly served as the vice-captain of the four-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winners.

He captained the Black Stars to finish second the 2010 AFCON in the absence of skipper Stephen Appiah and vice John Mensah.

In an interview on the Joy Sports Link on Saturday, Kingson insisted that the title of captain does not translate to a higher salary in the Black Stars.

“Sometimes I feel bad and I say ‘why are you fighting on this?’ It is just to differentiate you from us. It is the performance that matters. You can be the captain and sit on the bench," he told Nathaniel Attoh.

"With this captain’s armband, you don’t take more than anybody [in the Black Stars] in terms of salary and winning bonus. I don’t see the reason why people fight over it. It causes destruction.”

He recounted an event where Stephen Appiah was chosen as the captain ahead of him. He stated that he did not hesitate to support the former Juventus man.

“We were having a meeting and Appiah was called as a captain and he got up and told them that, I should be the captain because I was the most senior player and I tapped him and said that I will support him.”
