Sports journalist Awal Mohammed has revealed that former Black Stars goalkeeper Richard Kingston, also known as Olele, played a pivotal role in reviving Benjamin Asare’s career, guiding him back into top-flight football.
Asare, now Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper, suffered a severe knee injury in 2023, which forced him to step away from the game and explore other means of survival.
However, Kingston intervened, offering support and overseeing his rehabilitation before helping him secure a move to Accra Great Olympics.
"Two years ago, he [Benjamin Asare] had a severe leg injury, which led to speculations that he had quit football. It was Olele who contacted him, facilitated his rehabilitation, and later provided him the opportunity to play for Olympics," Mohammed said on Kessben FM.
Asare later moved to Hearts of Oak, where his impressive performances earned him a Black Stars call-up. Initially not the club’s first-choice target, injuries to other goalkeeping options paved the way for his signing.
Now, he is the club captain and Ghana’s number one, poised to feature at the World Cup.
