Robertson admits Reds forwards are 'paid to be selfish' after Mane & Salah clash

Andy Robertson insists the bond between Liverpool's forwards is 'really strong' but admitted they are 'paid to be selfish' when it comes to scoring goals.

Liverpool's front three of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino have been devastating in the Premier League for the last few seasons but there have been the occasional disagreements.

Mane was furious when Salah failed to pass to him during an attacking in their 3-0 win over Burnley last season.

Mane and Salah have competed in the scoring charts in recent years with the pair jointly winning the Premier League Golden Boot alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the 2018-2019 campaign.

Salah managed 19 league goals last season and 23 in all competitions while Mane scored 18 in the league and 22 in total.

Robertson, who is usually creating the assists for his team-mates, admitted there is a selfish streak within all of the Reds' forwards but insisted it's their job to be ruthless in front of goal.

'The relationship [between the front players] off the pitch is really strong, and on the pitch, the link-up play and everything is always good,' Robertson told the Liverpool Echo.

'But these players are also paid to be selfish and we need them to score goals and take risks in the final third, and we add [Diogo] Jota into that category now.

'When they are in front of goal, we expect them to shoot and score. There have been certain occasions where people say Bobby could have passed, Sadio could have passed, or Mo could have passed, but these guys are paid money to make split-second decisions and score goals for us.

He added: 'Their relationship is really strong just like every other relationship in the squad and that is why over the last couple of years we have been quite successful.'

Salah is currently on eight league goals for the current season with a further two in the Champions League. Mane has had a slower start to the campaign with five goals in total, four of which have come in the Premier League.

Summer signing Diogo Jota has also contributed to the Reds' goal tally with nine strikes in all competitions while Roberto Firmino has found the net twice.
