Rodgers rules out Johnston move

Published on: 17 July 2018

Brendan Rodgers insists 'special talent' Mikey Johnston is 'very much' part of his plans and won't be allowed to leave Celtic this summer.

It has been reported that the 19-year-old winger could possibly be used as a makeweight in a deal to bring Hibernian midfielder John McGinn to Glasgow, but Rodgers isn't keen on the idea.

Former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs is also reportedly keen to take him on loan to newly-promoted St Mirren, but it seems Johnston is going nowhere.

"He is very much staying here at Celtic at this point in time," said the Hoops boss.

"He is an exciting young talent at 19 years of age. He is learning the other side of the game in terms of the tactical idea of pressing and how to work and how to recover but there is no doubt he is a special talent.

"So at this moment in time he is very much in my plans. We need to develop him, get him some games and if that changes there is a number of options with teams that would like to take him, but at this moment he stays."

Rodgers has made it clear that he is interested in signing McGinn, who is out of contract at the end of the forthcoming season at Easter Road and free to sign a pre-contract agreement in January. Celtic and Hibs have so far failed to reach any agreement.

Celtic are 1/10 to win the Scottish Premiership title this season, with Steven Gerrard's Rangers priced at 8/1 and Lennon's Hibernian 50/1.
