Roma 'in talks with Arsenal to extend Henrikh Mkhitaryan's loan deal and add obligation to buy'

Roma are locked in talks with Arsenal over extending Henrikh Mkhitaryan's loan deal and will even add an obligation to buy, according to reports.

The 31-year-old wideman joined the Serie A club for a short-term stint at the start of the season, and the move appears to have rejuvenated Mkhitaryan's career after his Premier League woes.

Il Tempo newspaper believe that Roma have proposed taking Mkhitaryan on loan again for another campaign, and will include a promise to stump up a transfer fee in June 2021.

Mkhitaryan has scored six goals and recorded four assists across 20 appearances for Roma this term, and the club are believed to have paid €3million to secure the loan last summer.

The Armenian star's contract at the Emirates only runs until next year, however, meaning that a contract extension would have to be agreed before any loan switch with Roma is finalised.

His £26million move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 was dogged by poor form, and the Old Trafford outfit used him as a makeweight in a swap deal for Alexis Sanchez just two years later.

But after netting just nine goals in 59 appearances in North London, Mkhitaryan was once again shipped out.

However, Mkhitaryan appears willing to remain in the Italian capital long-term and, according to Corriere dello Sport, told Arsenal: 'My time in London is over, I hope you manage to find an agreement with Roma because my desire is to remain.'

And in another interview, the winger once again expressed his desire to play for Roma next season.

'Since the first day I arrived here in Rome, I feel very good in the club, in the city, and of course it would be nice to stay here,' he told the 'A Day With…' programme sponsored by the Italian embassy in Armenia.

'The main target will be the Champions League, other wins and titles.

'People underestimate Serie A, the Italian league, but it's more than interesting to play here. The league is getting better and better, and last year's transfers speak for themselves.'
