Sainsbury keen for Socceroos armband

Trent Sainsbury says it would be a "huge honour" to be handed the Australia captaincy ahead of the 2019 Asian Cup.

The 26-year-old defender is one of the senior players set to be given a chance to skipper the team during Graham Arnold's first games in charge.

In this team we have so many players reaching the 25-30 cap mark and they're all leaders in their own right.

He is seen as the favourite to get the job, with Mat Ryan and Mark Milligan among the other contenders.

Those three are among a six-man leadership group, along with Robbie Kruse, Mat Leckie and Aaron Mooy.

The vacancy as skipper has arisen after Mile Jedinak announced he was retiring from international football following the World Cup 2018 in Russia.

Sainsbury said: "I'd like to be captain, no way around that. Anyone who has the chance to captain their country, it's a huge honour.

"But in this team we have so many players reaching the 25-30 cap mark and they're all leaders in their own right."

Arnold is set appoint a full-time skipper in time for January's Asian Cup and will rotate the captaincy in three upcoming fixtures beginning with the friendly against Kuwait.

The Socceroos then host South Korea and Lebanon on home soil next month.

Sainsbury feels the new players in the squad have slotted in well as Arnold tests out his possibilities leading up to the Asian Cup, where Australia will be defending the trophy they won on home soil in 2015.

"We have boys coming in who are fresh-faced and it's always nice to have that new energy in the team," he said. "When you have a culture like ours, probably the best in the world, it makes it easy for any player to come in and find their feet quickly."

Australia are 8/15 to win their friendly against Kuwait, who are 19/4 with the draw 3/1.

The Socceroos are 9/2 to win 1-0.
