Kuffuor – Clottey should be Ghana first-choice striker

Ex-Ghana international Emmanuel Osei-Kuffuor says Emmanuel Clottey should be made the Black Stars first choice striker following his heroics in the African Champions League.

The Berekum Chelsea attacker scored two goals on Sunday against giants TP Mazembe to extend his lead as the competition’s leading scorer with 11 goals so far in the competition.

Ghana have just one recognized striker world-class striker Asamoah Gyan with other players who have been tried in the position failing to impress.

Kuffuor, who won the Caf Champions League with Hearts of Oak, says Clottey who has been on the fringes of the Black Stars squad should be given the chance to start.

“The boy (Clottey) is playing so well and we can all see that. He has been part of the team but has not been getting game time. You look at his competitors and I think he is ahead of them all,” Kuffuor said.

“He needs confidence and it can only come when he plays regularly for the Stars. He is the top scorer in the Champions League and that says a lot.

“He has been consistent for some time now and I feel he is ready to strike regularly for the team.

“He is not the best striker on the continent currently for nothing.

“It has happened to me before and I am convinced he has done enough to deserve a starting berth in our national team with all due respect to his competitors.”

Clottey has just two goals to equal the African Champions League scoring record set by Nigerian Stephen Worgu in 2007.

Youngster Abdul Majeed Waris, the leading scorer in the Swedish top-flight, is also eyeing a place in the starting line-up of the Black Stars.
