Sampdoria 0-0 Atalanta: Draw drags Blucerchiati close to relegation

Published on: 14 February 2016

Sampdoria drew 0-0 with Atalanta at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris on Sunday, as the Blucerchiati edge closer to the Serie A relegation zone.

The first half was promising, with the Doriani playing some neat possession football but the second half lacked in spark. Samp should possibly have received a penalty though after Andrea Masiello had handled the ball in the penalty area.

Il Doria dominated possession throughout the match and had a few opportunities to break the deadlock, but La Dea also had some chances from set-pieces and on the counter-attack. Alessandro Diamanti blasted over the bar and Alejandro Gomez had an effort saved by Samp goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano. Antonio Cassano also forced two solid saves out of Orobici goalkeeper, Marco Sportiello.

Soon after, Mauricio Pinilla had thought he gave Atalanta the lead, but his goal was correctly disallowed for offside. Samp midfielder Joaquin Correa cleared an Masiello effort off the line and Fabio Quagliarella’s long-range effort just missed the target.

Atalanta dominated possession in the second half but they struggled to penetrate through the Samp defence. Dodo had two chances for the Blucerchiati but Sportiello saved his header and the Brazilian blasted another shot over the bar.

The Doriani should have got a penalty after Masiello hand-balled in his own penalty area, but the referee waved play on. La Dea did have an opportunity to score but Marten De Roon’s shot went straight to Viviano.
Ricky Alvarez could have won it late on for Samp but he headed the ball over the bar.

Atalanta have not won a league match in 10 rounds now, while Sampdoria are winless in seven.
