Wenger exposed as he wanted Frimpong to play for England

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger has exposed himself as he has revealed that he did not want Emmanuel Frimpong to play for Ghana.

The 19-year-old opted to play for the Black Stars this week after snubbing England.

There was suspicion that Europeans coaches are trying to dissuade African players from playing for their home countrie.

This makes it difficult for such players born or raised in Europe to make their decision in favour of the African nations.

The French coach Wenger has now revealed that he would have loved the 19-year-old represent England instead of opting to sign up as an international for Ghana.

"Personally and geographically it would be easier for us if he plays for England but you have to respect the gut feeling of the boy," Wenger said.

"It feels that certainly he will have a better chance to play for Ghana than for England.

"That is happening in modern society in every single country. Players are torn between two countries."

It is suspected that Danny Welbeck was advised by Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson to play for England instead of Ghana.

Fearing the consequences of going against manager, Welbeck opted against playing for Ghana to better his chances at Manchester United.

Frimpong, the combative midfielder has made an impressive breakthrough into the Arsenal side this season.

Frimpong was called up to Stuart Pearce’s Under-21 squad for the recent international period but withdrew due to injury.

The Ghana FA has begun to documentation of his switch and expects Fifa to waste no time in ratifying his switch in allegiance.
