Amine Harit resumed training with Schalke on Monday, less than three weeks after he was involved in a fatal car accident in Morocco.
Harit, a Morocco international, collided with a pedestrian attempting to cross a road in Marrakesh on July 6, days after returning from the World Cup, according to reports. He was briefly taken into custody and later allowed to return to Germany.
One of the Bundesliga's breakout stars last season, Harit began his preseason with a routine performance check behind closed doors.
"It speaks volumes that he was allowed to leave the country and has all of his papers back," Schalke sporting executive Christian Heidel told reporters, adding that Harit "does not have to go back to Morocco for a court date."
The winger did not comment on the incident on Monday, but Heidel said that might change in the future. "The day will come when he'll make a statement," he said.
Schalke coach Domenico Tedesco told Bild he was only able to get a short impression of Harit on Monday, "but that was a positive one."
Meanwhile, former Schalke captain Benedikt Howedes is expected back in training on Tuesday.
Howedes, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, spent last season on loan at Juventus, and despite a contract through 2019-20, he has become surplus to requirements with Schalke.
But despite the 30-year-old's brief return to his hometown club, his future lies elsewhere, Heidel said on Monday.
"Both sides want Benni to make a change," Heidel said. "That's no secret."
