Schweinsteiger opens lid on treatment from Mourinho at Manchester United

Bastian Schweinsteiger had two underwhelming seasons at Manchester United between 2015 and 2017, following a trophy-laden 13-year spell in Bayern Munich's first team, and he has pointed to Jose Mourinho as a reason why it didn't work in England.

The 37-year-old, who hung up his boots in 2019 after playing for MLS side Chicago Fire for two years, pointed to the potential influence of Pep Guardiola when it came to Mourinho deciding not to play him much.

"I didn't play a lot under [Mourinho] unfortunately, but I still respect him. He's a great coach who has won a lot of trophies. It was a strange and difficult situation, he never really explained why," Schweinsteiger said during an interview with the BBC.

"Maybe it was because I played with Pep Guardiola and had played football for Pep Guardiola, who Mourinho doesn't like."

A difficult departure

In spite of his treatment under Mourinho, Schweinsteiger still maintains plenty of respect for him.

"Still, I actually liked what Mourinho was doing. Of course, the style of play is different, I think that's why Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] left," Schweinsteiger explained.

"It wasn't so much football, sometimes it was more direct. But he was successful with his teams. It was just a weird feeling [to play under him]."

Prior to leaving Manchester United, Mourinho sent Schweinsteiger away to train with the reserves before his move to Chicago Fire was completed. The Portuguese coach has since described that as a mistake.
