‘Security breach’ at Black Stars matches a major concern

Multiple security breaches at Black Stars matches have become a growing concern, as pitch invaders dominate headlines after recent international games, instead of the principal actors. 

Security officials have come under the spotlight for their lack of planning and foresight as the Ghana Football Association continues to cough huge sums of money to pay fines due to negligence of duty.

It appears security capos tasked with ensuring  safe environment for football, have slept on their jobs as consistently pitch invaders take centre stage after every international match by the country's A-national team, the Black Stars.

A passionate fan Mohammed Huzeinu, 25, has been sentence to 100 days in prison after he invaded the pitch to embrace his  icon Antoine Semenyo during the epic match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday March 21, 2025.

The latest incident adds to the growing concerns about pitch invasion during Ghana's international matches on home soil - which is becoming prevalent in the powerful West African nation.

Already, the Ghana Football Association has paid $30,000 in expenses due to fans invading the pitch during a Black Stars games. The FA paid $20,000 for the incident which happened at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi during the game between the Black Stars and the Central African Republic. There was another incident at the Cape Coast stadium where the Ghana FA paid $10,000.

During the game between Ghana and Chad, Mohammed Huzeinu, a 21-year-old fan was arrested for invading the pitch and will face a sentence of 100 days in prison.

As a result of these incidents, football authorities have issued stern warnings to fans to avoid pitch invasions, calling such actions "unwelcome scenes" that can tarnish the country's image on the international stage.

They have stressed the importance of ensuring that matches are conducted in a safe and secure environment for both players and fans.

While Ghana is not yet widely notorious for pitch invasions, the recurring incidents during key matches have drawn attention and concern.

Authorities are taking steps to curb these behaviors and maintain a positive reputation for Ghanaian football in international competitions.
