Senegal could host AFCON 2025 if they find a co-host- Senegal FA President

Senegal Football Federation President Augustin Senghor says the country could host AFCON 2025 if  any of their neighbors agree to co-host with them.

AFCON 2019 will be hosted by Egypt with the 2021 and 2023 editions to be held in Cameroon and Ivory Coast retrospectively.

Last week Senegal hosted the CAF Awards putting them in pole position to host the Cup of Nations following the success of the event.

But with the number of teams to participate in the competition increased, Augustin Senghor says it will be prudent if they found a co-host to make a bid.

"This is our wish as well as that of the Senegalese authorities. During the talks we had in recent months with the President of the Republic, he expressed this wish. It has a policy of trying to strengthen sports infrastructure," he said.

"With the organization of the Youth Olympic Games , we will have a new Olympic stadium of 50,000 seats in Diamniadio [ 30 kilometers southeast of Dakar, editor's note ]. The Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium, which makes 60,000, will be renovated and rehabilitated to make it a modern compound. And there are three other stadiums elsewhere in the country, in Ziguinchor, Saint-Louis and Diourbel that will be redone. It will give us five or six stages."

"But our project, now that CAN is at 24, is to co-organize with our neighbors in Guinea, The Gambia and Mauritania. From a geographical point of view, we have this proximity. The distances are not huge. Senegal could be the hub of a major tournament organized by three or four countries. In any case, it is our ambition."

"Since 1992, we have not organized CAN. Senegal has shown its ability to host major events, notably through the CAF Awards. We have infrastructure that is growing everywhere. We are well off in terms of accommodation, especially hotels. Highways are developing. We have two big airports. The Regional Express Train is being set up. Senegal will be able, in four years, to organize a big CAN, alone or with other countries."
