David Wagner knows a thing or two about Jurgen Klopp's modus operandi, but any inside knowledge gained working as the German's assistant served little good, as his Huddersfield side were humiliated 6-1 by Manchester City.

Instead the German opted for blanket defence, which turned out on this occasion to be a particularly poor choice as David Silva and Sergio Aguero ripped the visitors apart.

Positives

Last seen in Manchester for a low-speed 0-0 draw in May, Huddersfield witnessed City travel through more gears this time around with three goals inside 10 first half minutes.

So slick were the home side, Huddersfield did not even manage to get close enough to commit a first-half foul. More punishment followed in the second period.

Negatives

Leroy Sane and Ryad Mahrez are not starting for good reason. The two wide men are profligate and unreliable compared to the usual suspects. Pep Guardiola will have more tips for both men after this game.

Manager rating out of 10

9 -- Guardiola has his side looking hungrier than ever. Although this alertness should come as little surprise, City already look worryingly formidable at this early stage.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Ederson, 6 -- Reached half time with more assists (1) than saves (0), his raking pitch-length pass upfield finding Sergio Aguero for the third goal. Spectator for practically the entire match.

DF John Stones, 7 -- Brings calmness to the backline. Here his languid strolls out of defence ensured smooth transition into attack. But he allowed Jon Stankovic ahead of him for the goal.

DF Vincent Kompany, 7 -- Quietly efficient, if a little sloppy on occasion. Difficult to maintain concentration with so little to do.

DF Aymeric Laporte, 7 -- Tempted forward to try his luck, so quiet were things in his area of the pitch. Had the left side nicely under control, despite Benjamin Mendy's frequent displacements into attack.

MF Benjamin Mendy, 9 -- Blistering run in from the flank to set up the second goal. Beautiful cross in for Sergio Aguero's hat trick. Constantly involved.

MF Ilkay Gundogan, 6 -- A flitting presence in midfield, where his energy carried him forward but his passing and control sometimes let him down.

MF Fernandinho, 7 -- Sauntering brief alongside Gundogan in a well-stocked midfield. Still ticking over nicely in the last minute, when setting up Sane with a clever back heel in the box.

MF Bernardo Silva, 8 -- Wide right to cover for the lack of a right (wing) back, but moved central after David Silva's withdrawal. Nice touches as usual but fluffed his lines when presented with a chance for the seventh.

MF David Silva, 9 -- Quick off the mark with two wonderful balls into the box within the first three minutes. Continued a masterclass of passing and topped it all off with an inch-perfect free-kick past the rooted Ben Hamer.

FW Gabriel Jesus, 8 -- Lively start rewarded with a goal. Energetic tracking of Philip Billing saw him tackling back by the corner flag. Essential part in setting Sane free for the sixth goal.

FW Sergio Aguero, 9 -- Goals win prizes, and Aguero gets more than anyone. Another three for the razor-sharp Argentinean, who could have had two or three more, after hitting the post and going close. In fine early season form. A superb hat trick -- his 13th for the club.

Substitutes:

MF Riyad Mahrez, 6 -- Injected pace, but proved greedy and profligate.

FW Leroy Sane, N/R -- Stretched Huddersfield down both flanks, forcing the final goal off Terence Kongolo.

MF Phil Foden, N/R -- 81st minute appearance for Gundogan. Caused customary panic in the box with his quick feet and changes of direction.
