Sergio Ramos' reasoning for avoiding political meeting

Spain's minister of health Salvador Illa, sports minister Irene Lozano and director of the coordination centre for health alerts and emergencies Fernando Simon joined a number of footballers in a video conference on Tuesday, however a few big names didn't join.

Dani Carvajal, Gerard Pique, Asier Illarramendi and Koke were on the call, but Barcelona and Real Madrid captains Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos weren't involved.

Messi declined as he thought Pique would be a better fit, being Spanish, but the Real Madrid captain had other reasons for not getting involved.

One reason was that he didn't like the idea that the meeting was not broadcast live to the population.

He believed that the meeting wouldn't be as natural and free flowing as it could have been and that he would not be able to ask the questions that he would have liked to, so for that reason he declined the offer.

There was also a sense that the meeting was more of a photo op than anything else.
