After racing to a four-goal lead at halftime, Empoli held off struggling Salernitana to win a thrilling Serie A match 4-2 on Saturday.

Andrea Pinamonti, Patrick Cutrone, and a Stefan Strandberg own goal placed the visitors three goals up in about a quarter of an hour, and the game appeared to be over when Pinamonti scored his second penalty spot goal seconds before halftime.

However, Salernitana, who were playing their first match under new coach Stefano Colantuono, rallied quickly after the restart and halved the lead in the 55th minute when Ardian Ismajli placed the ball into his own net after Luca Ranieri scored his first Serie A goal.

Empoli rode their luck in the closing minutes, with Guglielmo Vicario clawing out Milan Djuric's header from beneath the bar, and hung on for a win that puts them up to 10th place with 12 points.
