SERIE A - Inter Milan miss the chance to go top of Serie A

Published on: 25 September 2021

Inter Milan lost out on going top of Serie A following a dramatic 2-2 draw with Atalanta on Saturday, allowing city rivals AC Milan to maintain their lead with a 2-1 win over Spezia, in which Daniel Maldini perpetuated a family dynasty.

Champions Inter are in third place, two points behind leaders Milan, following a tense match at the San Siro that saw substitute Federico Dimarco hit the crossbar with an 86th-minute penalty and Atalanta's Roberto Piccoli have a last-gasp winner ruled out amid frenzied protestations.

Following the draw, Atalanta are in fifth place, highlighting their attacking danger and Gian Piero Gasperini's team's apparent determination to continue punching above their weight in Italy's top flight.

"We've got a bitter taste from the draw, we feel that we could have had more," Inter coach Simone Inzaghi told DAZN.

"We fell apart a bit after the penalty, but we were excellent in much of the first half and the second against a very good Atalanta team."
