SERIE A - Napoli, Koulibaly: "I love Spalletti calling me commander"

Published on: 21 October 2021

Attending Napoli latest pre-match press conference, Partenopei veteran backliner and vice-captain Kalidou Koulibaly talked about the upcoming Europa League game, against Legia Warszaw:

"We’re after a win in tomorrow’s game, we’ll need to put in a good performance and be patient. We’re facing an experienced team who are currently top of the group. They’ll be sitting back ready to catch us on the break. We’ll need to be patient and resolute if we’re to come away with a victory. It’s a must-win game for us. We’ll give our all to try to top the group and qualify for the round of 16.

While we’ve been doing great in Serie A we’re yet to win in Europe, we need to win in order to finish top. We’ll seek to bring our domestic form into the Europa League tomorrow evening. We’ve got a good team which is capable of great things but we’ll have to be fully focused. We’ll need to keep our feet on the ground while at the same time knowing we can beat them.

I like the fact that the boss calls me ‘commander', but there are many important players in this squad besides myself. I’ve been at Napoli for many years now and I just try to give my all and do what the coach asks of me.

Our dressing room is close-knit and we’re always raring to go. We’ve got some positive momentum from our victories, and they’ve given us strength to carry on going. We’re pretty calm here at the club, we give our all in training and we just need to keep performing in games. This is one of the best Napoli sides I’ve been a part of. Luciano Spalletti has given us a lot of confidence and so far things have gone swimmingly. Yet in football you can never rest on your laurels, because every team we face will be alert to our danger.

The racist chanting cuts deep. After what happened in Florence I didn't sleep for two days. Everyone’s got to contribute in the battle against racism, and personally speaking I’ve been doing what I can for some time. I’d like to sit down and talk to these people in order to understand where they’re coming from with these chants”.
