Serie A Youth Watch: Sassuolo winger provides the goods in draw

Published on: 22 March 2016

Sassuolo winger Matteo Politano was the unlikely goalscorer as his side drew 1-1 with Udinese on Sunday.

The forward minded player, on loan from Roma, has found action hard to come by this term.

He’s featured in 21 matches for Sassuolo this season, a respectable figure, however only nine of those came with the Italian in the starting lineup.

Take into account the amount of times he’s been subbed off this campaign, and he’s completed the full 90 minutes in just two games for the Neroverdi.

However, they might be inclined to give him more time as he rescued a point against Udinese, ensuring that Sassuolo wouldn’t slip to a second consecutive loss and see their European dream become impossible.

Politano produced a bullet header to complement the excellent cross of Federico Peluso, to prevent Sassuolo from slipping 12 points behind fifth placed Inter.

Sassuolo do hold an option to make the Italy Under-21 international’s stay in Emilia-Romagna a permanent one, and the recent high praise from coach Eusebio Di Francesco points towards a happy ending in the summer.

Prior to his Sassuolo move, the 22-year-old’s career path was a confused mess and had no direction.

He started at Roma, only to be traded off to Pescara and then back to Roma as they grew tired of Gianluca Caprari, who they included in the initial deal to sell Politano.

With some continuity in his life and another feather in his cap with his second goal of the season, Politano might yet light up a few more matches before too long.
