Chinese Super League side Shenzhen FC have decided to make new signing Frank Acheampong captain for their season opener on Wednesday to console him over the death of his mother.
Acheampong's mother passed away days before the club unveiled him for the 2021 season.
Shenzhen captain Gao Lin explained that he has given the captaincy to Acheampong after the Ghana international opted to stay and play in the league rather travel to Ghana for the funeral.
"He was very grieved at his mother's passing. We hope we can make him feel supported and not alone here,'' veteran striker Lin is quoted by xinhua.
''We also wanted to express our gratitude to him as sacrificed so much for the team."
Acheampong will walk the team out when they face Henan Songshan Longmen on Wednesday, 21 April 2021.
He spent three years at Tianjin Teda where he impressed heavily, scoring 34 goals on 86 appearances.
