Simeone's assistant Mono Burgos set to leave Atletico this summer

Published on: 26 May 2020

After almost eight and a half years at Atletico Madrid, German Burgos will leave the club this summer.

His departure has been an open secret in the last few months and Nelson Vivas is expected to succeed him as Diego Simeone's assistant coach.

The contract-renewal picture without Burgos

In February 2019, Simeone extended his contract with Atletico and posed next to members of his staff and club directors.

The only person missing was Burgos who was unable to reach an agreement with the club that made him one of the best paid assistants in the world.

Burgos changed his agent, but Atletico were adamant and were not willing to meet his demands.

New horizons for Burgos

Simeone's right-hand man is contemplating a solo career as head coach and at the end of the season he will start talking with potential suitors.

Media reports in Argentina have suggested interest from River Plate, but these seem to be nothing more than rumours for the time being.

Vivas' return

Vivas was Simeone's assistant in his compatriot's first steps into coaching from 2006 to 2011.

Personal issues prevented him from following the current Atletico head coach to Catania.

Before even hanging up his boots, Simeone had informed Vivas of his desire to include him in his coaching staff in the future.

Burgos lost prominence

Vivas re-joined forces with Simeone in 2018, after spells as a head coach at Quilmes, Estudiantes and Defensa y Justicia.

At Atletico he was key both in monitoring opponents, as well as helping with tactics, as Burgos began to lose prominence despite being assistant.

Gabi could become the next Tiago

Gabi Fernandez has emerged as a potential addition to Simeone's coaching staff.

However, the former Atleti captain will not return as an assistant coach and will get the opportunity to learn next to Simeone - as happened with another former player, Tiago, in the past.

Simeone is adamant that Vivas is the man who should replace Burgos.
