Solomon Asante opens up on switching from Burkina Faso to Ghana and says unable to speak French fluently contributed to his decision

Former Black Stars winger Solomon Asante has opened up on why he switched his international allegiance from Burkina Faso to Ghana.

Asante was born to Ghanaian parents and started his professional career at the Feyenoord Academy.

In the 2009/2010 season he moved from Ghana to join Burkinabe giants ASFA Yennenga.

After emerging top scorer of the Burkina Faso top-flight and helping Yennenga to clinch the title, he caught the attention of the national team handlers.

Asante was invited to the Burkina Faso team for an international friendly against South Africa on 10 August 2011 where he came on as a substitute with ten minutes to full-time.

However, the former Berekum Chelsea and TP Mazembe attacker made a u-turn to feature for the Ghana.

"Well, those experiences were pretty different," Asante told USL Argentina.

"Burkina Faso is a French-speaking country so it wasn’t easy for me. Back then, I couldn’t speak French fluently and then it was hard but I thank them."

"It was really great for me because it gave me a lot of international experience. I could play against a lot of top players and also learn from them."

Currently playing in America for Phoenix Rising, Asante achieved 21 international games for the Black Stars including six Africa Cup of Nations appearances and three World Cup qualifying games.

"Playing for Ghana was one of the greatest things that happened to me,"

"I got the chance to play the World Cup qualifiers, the Africa Cup of Nations – I think I played it twice and learned a lot, you know."

"It is amazing playing for the national team, my value went up, my name was well known and it made me super happy."

The 29-year-old has been putting impressive displays in the American second-tier competition since joining Phoenix Rising in 2018.
