Sousa: Fiorentina showed character

Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa praised his team’s mental fortitude after they scored a last-minute winner to beat Inter 2-1 on Sunday night.

La Viola came from a goal behind to win after Marcelo Brozovic had given the Nerazzurri a first-half lead. However, Khouma Babacar’s late strike gave the Gigliati the three points.

“Mancini’s team played with a deep defence and they defended very well for much of the match.” said Sousa to Sky Sport Italia after the match.

“We played with intensity and I’m glad to see the team play with this pace because, when you meet a team that defends well, we struggle.

“We continued to believe after they scored, we are showing character, we are becoming more and more mature.”

Sousa was also pleased with the performance of Federico Bernardeschi:

“We started with him on the wing because he is powerful, and he has acceleration,

“He is starting to understand the game in a deeper way. He has everything except the ability to score consistently.

“For me the form of a player is not so important, but the player must be dynamic. The more tactical intelligence that a player has, the more they are able to make good decisions.”

Finally, the former FC Basel coach praised his defence’s performance.

“When you play an attacking game that pushes players forward it is normal that teams will counterattack against you,” added Sousa.

“Indeed, the fact that it happened several times during the game and the fact that we stopped them often shows we defended well.”
