South Africa vs Ghana: "Our strategy will work and we will win" - Ghana coach CK Akonnor

Published on: 06 September 2021

Ghana coach Charles Akonnor is confident his side can knock out South Africa in a 2022 crucial World Cup qualifier in Johannesburg on Monday evening.

Akonnor squad has been completely decimated with as many as NINE key players missing from the match at the famous FNB Stadium.

The European clubs have recalled their players as South Africa is considered a Covid red-list country which means the footballers would face a ten-day quarantine on their return to Europe.

But the Ghanaian gaffer is unfazed and insists his remaining charges will come good.

"What is important is that we have to be efficient. Against Ethiopia, we didn’t excite you guys but we were efficient and it’s because we won. As we speak now, we are on top of the table and so we are not going to allow influence of outside pressure to disturb us," he said

"Like I said, we are focused, we are here, we have seen South Africa against Zimbabwe, we have a strategy and we believe that it will work. We believe that even if they change their style of play we have an antidote to it and we will move out of this place with three points.

Two heavyweights of African football face off at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday as South Africa host Ghana in a huge World Cup 2022 qualifying clash.

The hosts kicked off stage two of the qualifying process with a 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe, while Ghana beat Ethiopia 1-0 to lead the way in Group G.

South Africa is in Group G along with Ethiopia, Ghana, and Zimbabwe. They have a difficult task ahead of themselves if they want to be eligible for the global spectacle.

Only the Groups A-J winners will be able to progress to the final round for Qatar 2022 qualification.

The five remaining African nations will face off in a two-legged playoff to determine the winner.

The next World Cup, which will be held in the Middle East for the first time, is scheduled to take place between 21 November and 18 December.
