Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhüttl described Mohammed Salisu as a fast learner in his assessment of the Ghanaian defender's impressive showing against Sheffield United.

Salisu scored his first goal for Southampton on Tuesday in EFL Cup victory to add to his rock-solid defensive displays this season.

Ahead of the match, Hasenhuttl said that he was very happy with how “nasty” he was in the tackle, but the Austrian boss said he needed improvement on the ball.

Salisu did improve and Hassenhuttl had nothing but praise for the 22-year-old.

“Yeah, definitely. He is strong against the ball and good on the man - we always knew from the beginning," Hasenhuttl said.

“Now he also adapts his game with the ball more and more, he is more and more patient on the ball and this is what we need, definitely, because finding the right solutions in the right moments is key of being in the game, in the zones where we want to have it.

“I must say he learned very quick, yes.”

Salisu hasn't missed a game for Southampton this season with six appearances to his name and scored one goal.
