Spadafora: Resuming Serie A is increasingly unlikely

Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora believes the chances of seeing Serie A resume are increasingly unlikely

Training will resume on May 18 rather than May 4 after the recent decree released by the Italian government – a decision that has left clubs, presidents and the player’s association angered.

As a result there is a race against the clock to finish the current season, and Spadafora admits it may be better for clubs to forget about completing the campaign.

“Talks are in progress between the scientific committee and the FIGC, who have presented a training protocol that wasn’t considered sufficient,” Spadafora told La7.

“However resuming training doesn’t mean resuming the league. If we don’t want uncertainty then all we have to do is follow France and the Netherlands who stopped everything.

“Honestly, I see resuming Serie A as increasingly unlikely. Training is a different topic, but if I were the presidents I would focus on the new season.

“The decision made by France could push Italy and other European countries to follow the same path, and listening to certain statements there could be a majority of presidents ready to ask for the suspension of the league and to best prepare for the new season.”
