Spain boss provides encouraging injury update on Man City's Aymeric Laporte

Spain are not concerned about Aymeric Laporte's injury ahead of the World Cup, as Luis Enrique has hinted the Manchester City man will be recovered in time to represent them in Qatar.

Laporte is yet to feature for City this season after undergoing surgery in the summer, although he posted recently that he has returned to training in some capacity. Pep Guardiola had originally estimated he would return by mid-September but later revised that to October.

That meant he missed Spain's two Nations League fixtures this week - their final games before the World Cup - but Enrique appears confident that Laporte won't be an injury doubt when he names his squad to take to Qatar next month.

Speaking after Spain edged a tight game in Portugal to win their Nations League group, Enrique discussed the players not present in his latest squad, including Laporte.

“I need to see Ansu Fati playing at Barca," he said. "Laporte is already recovered and is training with his team and [Mikel] Oyarzabal I prefer not to say anything. Let’s see how he recovers. But it is true that it will be a difficult squad and not everyone that I would like will be in it.”

Judging by Enrique's comments, there appears to be little concern over Laporte, and that calmness suggests he will be included in the Spain squad for the World Cup if he can prove his fitness when he returns to the City team. After John Stones limped off for England with a hamstring issue, Laporte's return could be timely for Guardiola with City playing 12 times before the break for the World Cup in six weeks.
