Spalletti: Real Madrid clash will test Roma’s European credentials

Published on: 16 February 2016

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti believes his side’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday evening, will be a true indicator of the Giallorossi’s competitive credentials.

His side has recently embarked on a four-game domestic winning streak coming into Wednesday’s tie and Spalletti has acknowledged the importance of a strong home performance ahead of the return leg in a fortnight’s time.

“I think this is a suitable challenge to understand if we are on the right track,” Spalletti told reporters at his pre-match press conference. “I am confident, because I saw my players train very carefully.

“We have taken a path which let’s us bring out the qualities of our team.”

The Giallorossi coach also noted the specific threat that Cristiano Ronaldo can potentially pose to his side, but believes the versatile Alessandro Florenzi does boast the capability to stifle the Portugal international.

“It’s clear that if your opponent is Ronaldo then you need to have some speed,” added Spalletti. “Florenzi is one of those players who knows how to do everything very well.

“You can use him anywhere and this approach will help us understand what his specific role is on the field.”

Spalletti was also vague as to whether Francesco Totti may feature against the Spanish outfit and whether Edin Dzeko will be given the nod after he netted only his second goal from open play in Serie A since August against Carpi.

“Francesco had problems prior to Carpi away and did not participate because he had the recurrence of an old problem,” the coach added.

“My choices will be made in the interest of the team and also as we aim to try to take advantage of the 50 percent chance that we have to make it past this round.”
