SPALLETTI: "WE PLAYED AS A TEAM, WELL DONE EVERYONE"

Published on: 18 March 2019

Following Thursday’s loss in the Europa League, Inter responded straight away to show heart and character in the derby, winning 3-2 thanks to goals from Vecino, De Vrij and Lautaro. "Our history is clear, we are Inter so it’s normal for us to be criticised after getting knocked out," said Luciano Spalletti after the game. "We did well to put it straight behind us, showing the right attitude again as a team. We forget about what happened on Thursday, we drew a line under it and got back on track with different sort of performance."

On his choice of team: "In truth, we didn’t have many options, it was easy! Vecino has more in his legs than Gagliardini and Brozovic, he knows how to make these runs. He approached the game very well, knowing when he had to drop deeper to cut out passes in midfield and when to make the most of the space between the lines. We also have to give credit to Lautaro, Politano, Perisic and everyone, the whole group. Conditions were tough for us but we put in a performance as team."

“The job of a coach stems from these things here. The lads deserve all of the credit that they’re getting, they put in a great performance. You need to have players who can turn things around completely, they are the ones that always make the difference. Everyone had Milan as the favourites and it wasn’t easy to take charge of the game.” Lastly, he also heaped praise on El Toro’s decisive display: “Lautaro is good at attacking spaces. He’s mentally strong and has character. You only need to look in his eyes to see it. He did really well and scored a vital penalty.”
