Former Ghana International Augustine Arhinful says they were motivated to play in the Ghana Premier League in the 1990's.
Arhinful joined Ghana Premier League side Obuasi Goldfields now AshantiGold Sporting Club said he received a signing on fee of Ghc 300 in 1991 before he joined the club from Soccer Missionaries.
He mentioned that they were motivated before and after games.
According to Arhinful, motivation could be one of the reasons why the standard of the Ghana Premier League has dropped now leading to player exodus.
“I don’t want to compare the standard of play now in the Ghana Premier League to our era. It will be very difficult for me as an individual to do those comparisons", he told Happy FM.
"When I signed for Goldfields my signing on fee was Ghc 300 in 1991.Winning bonus were paid every Monday. So we were very much motivated to play. During my time there was quality in the team as well".
He added that clubs are failing to keep good players which has also resulted to the low standards.
"What they are failing to do now is to keep better players and scout better players".
He advised there must be a holistic approach and research to find out why the standard of the league has dropped.
