Stephen Appiah eyes future Ghana coaching post

Ex-Ghana captain Stephen Appiah says he is keen on coaching the Black Stars when he retires permanently from football.

The Italy-based midfielder retired from international football after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

It is during his reign that Ghana enjoyed massive success internationally, qualifying for the World Cup for the first time.

Various factions closed ranks under Appiah’s leadership and united to catapult the Black Stars to great heights because of his exceptional leadership qualities.

Now with his decision to quit playing on the pitch, the Cesena star insists he will aid his country in the coaching field in future.

But he admits he has to start learning the trade by being the assistant coach before he takes the full post.

“Yes I would love to but now I am concentrating on Cesena and we would see what will happen,” Appiah, who led the Black Stars to two World Cups, said on Citi FM.

“I would love to handle the national team one day. I am not saying the Black Stars because in everything you have to start from somewhere.

“May be I have to study to be an Assistant Coach and later work a lot to get that chance to Coach the Stars” he said.

The decision is likely to be hugely supported by the president of the Ghana Football Association Kwesi Nyantakyi who has been keen on finding a role of the Ghanaian football icon since he quit the Black Stars.

A coaching course could be on the cards for Appiah under the support of the Ghana FA as well as some attachment with top clubs in Europe when he retires from club football.

At that point he could be considered for the technical staff of the Black Stars to impart leadership skills and also help in coaching the team.

Meanwhile, Appiah refused to comment on whether Marcel Desailly should be handed the Black Stars post.

He refused to be drawn into any name mentioning of which coach should take over the Black Stars in the place of Milovan Rajevac.

Appiah noted that he only hopes that Ghana gets a suitable trainer for the team but was not willing to mention names.
