The recently launched StepApp Community Library in Chorkor has had an instant hit in the deprived area in the Ghanaian capital Accra.
It was on the 9th of October 2010 that the Community Library was officially inaugurated at Chorkor in the district of Ablekuma South in Accra.
This was a venture undertaken by Mr. Stephen “Tornado†Appiah, founder of StepApp Foundation who envisaged the need for such a Library and went through all the trouble and necessary steps to make this dream a reality.
The ex-Ghana captain Appiah, who plays for Italian side Cesena, has been a strong advocate of educatiion for kids and this step is in the right direction.
The StepApp Foundation‘s community library is the only library in the local community serving children, youth and adults. The library was established in response to a critical challenge affecting the local Community.
The community Library offers a welcoming environment, inviting the people of Chorkor and its immediate environs to discover the joy and benefits of reading
The Library has 2 divisions - one for adults and the other for children.
It has a collection of more than 5000 books which cover mainly English, French, Mathematics, Science, Economics, Geography, Encyclopedias, Health Related books, Comics, fictions and many more.
On its opening day on the 13th of October 2010 the Library registered about 300 children and 56 adults. For many of the children, the StepApp community library is their first library experience and they are loving every minute they spend in there.
Stephen and the StepApp Foundation are especially thrilled about the growing success of the library in keeping with their goal to increase literacy rates among both children and adults.
Stephen believes having access to a local library is paramount to keeping a child’s interest in reading.
The library opens from Mondays to Fridays 9am to 5pm and on Saturdays 9am  to 3pm.
