Asamoah Gyan put a smile on Steve Bruce's face as he supplied the goals which sealed an important three points at home to Stoke.

The £13m man opened the scoring in the 9th minute before blasting home an unstoppable shot at the death to seal Sunderland's third win of the season.

Gyan, a summer signing from French club Rennes, caused the Potters plenty of problems throughout the afternoon and led the home side's attack with aplomb.

His contribution was particularly important with top scorer Darren Bent missing with a hamstring problem.

Bruce broke the club's transfer record for the second time in as many seasons to bring Gyan to the club, and the Sunderland boss was delighted with the Ghanaian's showing.

"That's what we invested all that money for and that's what it brings you," he said.

"Thankfully the owner dug deep and I did say that the reason was we can't keep relying on Benty.

"Asamoah stepped up to the plate and he was fantastic.

"His second goal was an excellent finish. He's a good player, full of life, full of energy and the crowd will enjoy watching him.

"He gave us a big lift just at the right time, and we needed one."
