Sulley Muntari, others facing Ghana axe

Published on: 03 August 2010

Several Ghana players including those considered unruly by Milovan Rajevac will be axed from the Black Stars under the new era to be rolled out by the Serbian coach.

Chief among them is Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari whose disruptive behavior nearly marred the Black Stars participation at the 2010 World Cup, Ghanasoccernet investigations have revealed.

The future of Muntari will be discussed when the Serbian meets the Ghana FA before next week’s friendly against South Africa

It is understood that several GFA members who witnessed at first hand the insults Muntari poured on the technical team and his colleagues at the World Cup will force the hands of the authorities.

His decision to leave the World Cup camp via a US$65,000 chartered private aircraft without permission before the squad officially left as well as his well- documented unruly behaviour before the tournament have led to the decision to leave him out.

Some players considered past their prime will make way for younger players who have shown the promise of making it at the higher level.

Long-serving players like Eric Addo are unlikely to be considered in future but experienced players like goalkeeper Richard Kingston will be in the hunt for stating places as adequate replacements for them have not been found.

The Serbian master tactician will arrive in Ghana on Friday to extend his expiring contract with the Ghana Football Association.

His new era will give the opportunity for young players like Egypt-based duo of Kofi Bekoe, Eric Bekoe and striker Yaw Antwi to show they can fight for place in the national team.

The net will be cast far and wide including players playing in the local league to fight against the young one who impressed at the World Cup.

Central to the future plans of Ghana are midfielders Andre Ayew and Kevin Prince Boateng while players who missed the World Cup like Emmanuel Agyemang Badu and injured Opoku Agyemang will be considered.

Central defenders Isaac Vorsah and Jonathan Mensah as well as deputy captain John Mensah will be retained but a good substitute for ageing Hans Sarpei is being sought after with Portugal based youngster David Addy likely to be considered.

Asamoah Gyan and Prince Tagoe will continue to fight for striking roles but Jordan Ayew’s early performances at Marseille will also be taken into consideration.

Kevin Boateng, Andre Ayew, Asamoah Gyan and Prince Tagoe are among the confirmed players for the friendly against South Africa while Coffie Bekoe and Bennard Kumordzi are among the new players for the game in Johannesburg on 11 August.
