Sulley Muntari's 'ghost' goal: Referee Paolo Tagliavento appointed coach of Ternana Calcio

Published on: 05 July 2018

Former Serie A referee Paolo Tagliavento has been confirmed as the new team manager of Serie C side Ternana Calcio.

In February 2012, Tagliavento came under heavy criticism after he disallowed Sulley Muntari's goal in a game between Inter Milan and Juventus.

The two sides were going for the Scudetto and met at San Siro for what was a crucial game in the title race. From a corner, Philippe Mexes headed toward goal, drawing a sensational save from Gianluigi Buffon.

Muntari was on hand to turn in the rebound, which the goalkeeper only got to after it had crossed the line, but the goal wasn’t given.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, the Bianconeri won the Scudetto and haven’t relinquished their grip on it ever since.

Tagliavento officiated in Serie A for 14 years and was a FIFA and UEFA referee between 2007 and 2017, before retiring in May.

“Ternana Calcio are delighted to announce the entry of Mr. Paolo Tagliavento into its senior management,” read a statement on the Rossoverde’s official website.

“A former international referee (221 matches in Serie A, 28 in the Champions League and 32 in Europa League), and Rossoverde fan, he has always been a profound connoisseur of Italian and European football.

“Tagliavento immediately established a positive relationship with the club, especially with President Stefano Ranucci, with whom mutual esteem immediately emerged, as well as so much of an shared vision that the former referee accepted the role of team manager.

“The role will see him committed 360° to various corporate and technical fields.”

Tagliavento, who turns 46 in September, was born in Terni – where the club are based, although they were relegated from Serie B last season.

Despite his career as an international referee, he controversially testified during the Calciopoli scandal in 2006.
