Sunderland are in pursuit of Wolverhampton striker Steven Fletcher as a replacement for the departed Asamoah Gyan.

The Ghana international sealed his permanent move to UAE club last month after his initial season’s-long loan deal expired at the end of the last campaign.

Gyan’s departure has created a void in the striking department of the Black Cats with Fraizer Campbell left as the only recognized striker– one manager Martin O’Neil is determined to fill.

The club have thus made a £1om bid to the relegated English Premier League side for Fletcher who has scored 22 goals in 61 appearances for Wolves since joinig from Burnley in 2010.

Sunderland however must fend off stiff competition from Aston Villa who are also reportedly interested the 25-year-old.
