Technical secretary Ramon Planes asks to leave Barcelona

Published on: 11 November 2021

Barcelona technical secretary Ramon Planes has asked to leave Camp Nou, continuing the reshuffle that is already underway in various departments.

Barcelona have recently replaced Ronald Koeman with Xavi and a new coaching team, with the new boss’ detailed strategy for the club said to run from the first team to the youth team and even include the medical department.

But Planes, who was appointed technical secretary in 2018, won’t be part of the project moving forward. Marca reports that the 54-year-old executive has made the request to leave the club, citing it as the right time to consider other projects.

Planes was appointed during the heavily criticised previous regime led by former president Josep Maria Bartomeu, yet he was given a contract extension by new chief Joan Laporta earlier this year given the impressive results he has achieved in the role.

The experienced executive, who has filled sporting director positions at various clubs over the last 20 years, is credited with the arrivals of players like Pedri and Ronald Araujo, as well as the development of new homegrown talents like Gavi.

It is said that his request to leave was met with ‘surprise’ by Laporta, vice-president Rafa Yuste and football director Mateu Alemany because they have been ‘very satisfied’ with Planes and his work.

Ex-Barcelona winger Marc Overmars, who has become one of Europe’s most respected sporting directors during his time in charge of Ajax’s football operation, has already been linked with the job.

SPORT’s Toni Juanmarti has reported that it is not currently clear if Overmars will remain at Ajax and claims the Dutchman is ‘waiting for the call’ from Laporta.
