The leagues around the world STILL playing amid coronavirus spread

Published on: 16 March 2020

Despite the coronavirus outbreak cancelling football across the globe, some big leagues are breaking the mold and continuing to field matches in light of the viral pandemic.

The Premier League, Champions League, La Liga, Serie A and many other competitions have been put on hold as Europe's cases of the virus escalate rapidly with several countries have gone into complete lock down.

Here, We look at some of the major leagues across the world that have continued to stage football matches even after protests from players, managers and staff.

Argentina

Argentina as a nation have taken precautions to protect against the coronavirus outbreak by postponing a number of sporting events, but strangely not football.

Whilst the Fencing World Cup, South American Swimming Championships, Athletics Grand Prix and an Olympic boxing qualification tournament had been postponed, the Copa de la Superliga involving the likes of Boca Juniors and Newells Old Boys continued.

The matches were played behind closed doors and the players handshakes were altered into elbow bumps for their safety - a strange choice given that they went on to tackle each other in close contact for 90 minutes. The national teams first two 2022 Qatar World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Bolivia at the end of the month have been postponed.

Brazil

South America is still getting its football fix, sort of. Brazil are another nation that have continued to play football amid the coronavirus outbreak. Whilst fans were not allowed in the stadiums to watch the match, it didn't stop the players from voicing their own concerns in a radical protest before the weekends kick-offs.

Gremio players walked on to the pitch wearing face masks in protest at having to play during the COVID-19 crisis on Sunday. Even the club's manager, Renato Portaluppi, took no chances and wore a mask during his press conference.

Gremio are one of a number of teams who were meant to feature in the South American Copa Libertadores competition during this week that has been postponed. However, the Campeonato Gaucho - Brazil's league from January to April - is set to stage the next game week commencing from March 21.

Russia

The Russian Premier League is one of the only leagues in world football to continue playing matches and let fans inside the stadiums. The league completed a full game week over the weekend and has no plans of postponing or cancelling the next set of matches that are set to be played from March 20 to March 22.

The Russian faithful, in particular Zenit St Petersburg fans, did not remain quiet on the current events, however. During a 7-1 thrashing of FC Ural, the Zenit fans held up a banner in a scarcely populated stadium that read: 'We are all infected with football and will die for Zenit.'

Turkey

The Süper Lig is one of the only leagues to still be playing matches in Europe. Whilst the decision for matches to go ahead was widely criticised, clubs such as Galatasaray took extra measures to disinfect their stadium a day before the matches commenced over the weekend. Workers dressed in protective white hazmat suits were kept busy in the run-up to the games. Matches were played behind closed doors.

Two of the 'Big Three' in the country went head-to-head with Galatasaray hosting their Istanbul-based rivals Beskitas in a 0-0 draw. Turkey has experienced a very low cases of the COVID-19 virus and matches for the next gameweek are still set to go ahead.
