The spotlight is on Griezmann

Lionel Messi will be rested for Barcelona's game against Dynamo Kiev, which means that Antoine Griezmann will have the opportunity to step up and play a key role in the Catalan side's Champions League duel on Tuesday.

The Frenchman has yet to live up to expectation since his 120 million euro move to Barcelona in the summer of 2019, and he has been continuously criticised for his performances on the pitch in this one year and a half at the club.

There have been rumours that Griezmann's relationship with the Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, is not ideal, while others claim that he is struggling to show off his talent because he is not playing in his natural position.

What is true is that Griezmann has yet to resemble the player who marvelled at Atletico Madrid and became a world champion with France in 2018.

Without Messi on the pitch against Dynamo Kiev, he will have an opportunity to shine in the Barcelona attack on Tuesday.

In fact, he is expected to play in his natural and favourite position and have the freedom to move on pitch - something he can't do when playing alongside Messi up front.

Griezmann will be called to guide the Blaugrana in Kiev, along with Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele, who have been the other two big Barcelona investments in recent years.

In his much-discussed interview with Jorge Valdano on Monday night, Griezmann acknowledged that he has yet to live up to expectation and broke down the reasons why he has struggled to adapt to Barcelona's game.

"I accept [criticism] because I know that we are not seeing the best Griezmann," the Frenchman recognised, "but I understand that every time something else comes out I am the first one to be [criticised].

"In a year and a half, I have had three coaches [at Barcelona]. That's not easy. I need time to adapt to my teammates and they to me. And on top of that there are formation changes.

"In addition, the candidates for the presidency also talk about me. I don't think it's the best thing for me when they talk about whether I'm a good signing or not."
