The uncertainty with the Premier League fixture list

Published on: 25 January 2022

The Premier League have been forced to postpone a total of 22 games in the last six weeks due to the fact that several teams didn't have enough players to fulfil their matches.

According to the Premier League protocols, the clubs who request game postponements have to prove that they can't field at least 13 fit outfield players and a goalkeeper.

The criteria do not refer to players who have contracted COVID-19 and as a result there are clubs who believe that some of the postponements were unfair, with a few coaches having already complained publicly.

"We have already reached a point where postponing games is damaging the integrity of the Premier League," Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta said earlier in January.

Based on these complaints, the Premier League have summoned a shareholders' meeting in order to change the protocols and to tighten up COVID-19 cancellation criteria.

Only one of the currently 20 postponed games has been rescheduled, as the Premier League are struggling to find dates for the rest to take place.

Meanwhile, the Times has reported that UEFA have given the green light for games to be scheduled on days when European football is on.
