The years are catching up with Man City defender Demichelis - Man Utd boss van Gaal

Louis van Gaal suggests that Manchester City's Martin Demichelis has entered the twilight of his career.

The Argentine was a little slow when clattering into teenage striker Marcus Rashford who whizzed past him near the byline in the first half of Sunday's 1-0 loss to Manchester United.

For some reason, referee Michael Oliver did not award the Red Devils a penalty but the incident was clearly noted by van Gaal who used to manage Demichelis at Bayern Munich.

"Rashford is very quick and Demichelis looked like the years are catching up with him," he said.

"He was a very good defender, he was my centre-back in Bayern but that is the life of football."

Additionally, City boss Manuel Pellegrini admits the 35-year-old had a subpar day which saw him replaced by Wilfried Bony in the 53rd minute.

"He was nervous," Pellegrini said. "He was not having a good day."
