Basake Holy Stars coach Abdulai Gazale believes his side capitalised on Hearts of Oak's underestimation to secure a memorable 1-0 victory in their debut match of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season on Sunday.
The newly promoted side shocked the Phobians at the Accra Sports Stadium, with Prince Tweneboah’s early goal in the second minute proving to be the difference. The result marked a dream start for the first-timers while adding pressure on Hearts of Oak, who were expected to win comfortably.
In a post-match interview, coach Gazale revealed that his team's victory was driven by Hearts of Oak's apparent disregard for the capabilities of Basake Holy Stars.
"They underrated us. When you even hear people's comments before the game⦠I saw comments on their flyer, saying we should come and collect goals. If you disrespect your opponents, they will discipline you,” Gazale said.
The defeat has triggered dissatisfaction among Hearts of Oak fans, with some calling for the immediate dismissal of coach Aboubakar Ouattara after just one game in the new season.
The loss further underscores the challenges Hearts may face as they attempt to improve on last season's struggles.
Meanwhile, Basake Holy Stars will look to build on this historic win as they prepare for their next match against Dreams FC.
