Thomas Partey eyes Spanish Super Cup crown as Atletico Madrid face off with Real Madrid today

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey is eyeing his first trophy in Spanish football as Atletico Madrid take on city rivals Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday night.

The two teams will clash at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium in Jeddah.

Partey, who joined Atletico as a teenager in 2013, has chalked success in Europe winning Europa League and Uefa Super Cup but hasn't won any Spanish trophy with the Madrid club.

The revamped Spanish Super Cup is taking place in Saudi Arabia. The competition previously featured the winner of La Liga and Copa del Rey.

However, this year's edition featured four teams. La Liga winners Barcelona, Copa del Rey winners Valencia, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid - the two qualified because they finished second and third respectively in La Lga last season.

Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 in the semi-finals while Partey excelled as Atleti fought back to stun Barcelona 3-2 in Jeddah.

The last time Atletico Madrid faced off with Real Madrid in a final was in 2018 Uefa Super Cup with the Reds winning. Partey provided an assist in that match.
