Timo Werner remains open-minded on Chelsea future

Published on: 09 September 2021

Timo Werner is in no rush to leave Chelsea, but the German is keeping an open mind about his future amid interest from Bayern Munich.

An expensive arrival from RB Leipzig last summer, Werner endured a challenging debut season at Stamford Bridge. His return of 12 goals and 15 assists was impressive, but nothing compared to the 34 and 13 he racked up in his final season in Germany.

His struggles in front of goal saw Chelsea head back to the transfer market to bring in Romelu Lukaku, who returned to the club in a deal worth a whopping £97.5m.

The Belgian is now expected to dominate the minutes up front, and with Kai Havertz and Mason Mount both usual starters alongside Lukaku, Werner is facing a battle to earn a regular spot in Thomas Tuchel's starting lineup.

With opportunities potentially hard to come by, Werner has been linked with a return to the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich, but sources have confirmed to 90min that such a move is not in Werner's plans as it stands.

Werner is not unhappy at Stamford Bridge and has no interest in pushing for a move in January, but he is open-minded about his future and is prepared to reconsider his stance once the current season comes to a close.

He is well aware of the level of competition for minutes at Chelsea and is concerned that an underwhelming campaign could cost him a spot in Germany's squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Should he fail to win over Tuchel and prove his quality to Germany boss Hansi Flick, then Werner would be prepared to make a decision on his Chelsea future and could look to join a team prepared to make him the focal point of their attack.

Werner started Chelsea's first Premier League game but has managed just one minute in the two matches following Lukaku's arrival, coming on as a stoppage-time substitute in the 2-0 victory over Arsenal.
