And there was also good news for Rooney's Manchester United team-mate Matteo Darmian who gave an encouraging injury update via Twitter.  The full-back had to go off in the second half of Saturday's defeat against Southampton while spitting blood following an aerial collision with Shane Long.

Under pressure Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was spotted at Manchester Airport on Sunday, the day after his side's defeat to Southampton. But the 64-year-old was not leaving the club, just travelling back to the Netherlands to celebrate his daughter's birthday. (Independent)
