Toni Kroos is Real Madrid's remarkable piece of business

On June 30, 2014, MARCA reported one of the bombshells of the summer transfer market - Toni Kroos' move to Real Madrid.

The midfielder was in Brazil at the time, in middle of a World Cup campaign with Germany that would ultimately end with the trophy in Rio.

The transfer saw Real Madrid agree a 25 million euro fee with Bayern Munich to take Kroos to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

History suggests that Los Blancos have struggled to sign players from Bayern, but their speed at sealing a deal for Kroos made the difference.

In the years that followed the transfer, figures within Bayern expressed their regret over letting the 24-year-old go.

"Kroos' move to Madrid was a mistake," Matthias Sammer, then Bayern's sporting director, said years later.

An economic coup

Getting the chance to sign a player of Kroos' quality and potential for 25 million euros comes around very rarely in football.

For example, Real Madrid had to pay 70 million euros to sign James Rodriguez from Monaco that same summer. James had performed exceptionally well at the World Cup, but so had Kroos.

Transfermarkt currently value the German at 48 million euros, meaning Real Madrid could almost double their money for him six years later.

A top performer

Kroos has enjoyed great success during his time in Spain and certainly got off on the right foot.

Under a month after lifting the World Cup in Brazil, he started as Los Blancos won the Supercopa de Espana against Sevilla.

On average, Kroos has played 44 matches and 3,702 minutes a season during his six campaigns as a Real Madrid player.

Silverware galore

Since Kroos put pen to paper at the Bernabeu, he's won 13 trophies with Los Blancos - two with Carlo Ancelotti as coach, ten with Zinedine Zidane and one with Santiago Solari.

There hasn't been a single season where Kroos hasn't added to his medal collection at Real Madrid, and he'll be looking to win more silverware this campaign.
