Toni laments current Azzurri attack

Hellas Verona striker Luca Toni attacked the Italian national team for their lacklustre striking ability ahead of their two friendlies with Spain and Germany.

The 38-year old is one of Italy’s all time highest scorers, netting more than 300 goals in all competitions and also helped the Azzurri lift the World Cup in 2006; but he now believes the current selection lack the attacking power needed to succeed at the European Championship in France this summer.

“We don’t have top level strikers who are use to playing at a high level, who are use to the pressure and can break a deadlock,” Toni explained to German newspaper Bild.

“We don’t have players like [Filippo] Inzaghi, Del Piero, Francesco Totti, or even me. It is depressing.

“However, Italy will do everything it can to put in a great performance. Especially against Germany, games against them are always special.”
